A new calendar year .. so ?
Yesterday I watched millions of people around the world and my city go out in the streets to celebrate what we call the beginning of the calendar year, or New Year's day !
I always (at least recently) wondered why we humans celebrates beginnings of calendar years.. whether Gregorian, Chinese or Hijri you are bound to find people celebrating those days.
People usually celebrate a day to commemorate a significant achievement made that day. What is it that we today are celebrating, the achievement of breathing through the last 365 days and living to see this day ? Is that something we really have control over or managed to achieve ?
Noteworthy - Today some might be celebrating the death of Saddam, others celebrating their successful completion of their Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca... and others might have many other reasons to celebrate...
Not that I am against celebrating in general but I like to stop and think.
